NEW YORK (AP) -- In his own view, Charles Woodson (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/4271) put together his best pro season in 2009. How appropriate, then, that he is The Associated Press 2009 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
The versatile Woodson tied for the league lead with nine interceptions, returning three for touchdowns, and was a key to the Packers' turnaround on defense. His role in Green Bay's ranking second in overall defense, first in interceptions (30), takeaways (40) and turnover margin (plus-24) earned Woodson 28 votes Tuesday from a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the NFL.
"Yeah, it's the best," Woodson said of his performance this season. "There's no question about it. I was hesitant to say it early on this year; just consistent play, playing at a high level every week, turnovers, playing multiple positions and playing them well. Combine that with just going out there and having fun, and this is definitely the best."
He doubled the number of votes for New York Jets (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/jets) cornerback Darrelle Revis (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/8268) in becoming the first Green Bay winner since Reggie White (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/5856) in 1998 and just the second Packer in the 36-year history of the award.
Woodson, the 1997 Heisman Trophy recipient, is the first cornerback chosen top defensive player since Deion Sanders (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/589) in 1994.

PERSONALLY I THINK DARRELLE REVIS DEFINITELY DESERVED THIS AWARD

Though I would have given it to Revis, I can see how it could have gone either way. With that said, it is absolute bullshit that he received double the votes of Revis. It should have been much closer than that. And the reason I would give it to Revis is because Revis defended the best guy the other team had to offer, man to man, every week. Charles Woodsons asignments switched from week to week depending on the speed of the best guy on the other team. There are many games in which Woodson was switched over to cover the TE. Revis stayed with the #1 WR all season, not no slow ass TE's. He may not have the TD's, Tackles and INT's to match Woodson. But that's because he completely shut down his side of the field.

agreed....he was a shut down corner all year & extremely consist...whereas woodson was involved in this past sundays cards game in which kurt warner did watever he wanted....not to much the game in which they gave up 500 passing yards to the steelers of all teams....revis kept all his assignments in check, leaving them with no more than 35 yards a game & he led the league in passes defended, while keeping the opposing quarterbacks' ratings well below the league average

and this isnt a biased pick because i do in fact watch all the games & have always been a HUGE supporter of charles woodson since his days at michigan

Last year against the Warner led cardinals Revis had 4 tackles, 2 Int's, 1 TD and 2 passes defended.

Here's some more stats showing how they each did when the man they were covering got targeted:

Revis: 40 receptions on 108 targets (37.0 percent) for 439 yards and two touchdowns.

Woodson: 40 receptions on 84 targets (47.6 percent) for 560 yards and six touchdowns.

AGAIN IM NOT SAYING REVIS DEFINITELY DESERVED IT, I AM JUST SAYING HE DESERVED MUCH MORE CONSIDERATION THAN HALF THE AMOUNT OF VOTES THAT WOODSON GOT.

so you watch every game joe .... does that include the rams, lions, and buccaneers....watching highlights on espn doesnt mean you watch every game......im sure tackling is a definite stat considered in getting this award and thats where woodson was a decently higher amount.....65 for woodson....47 for revis

of course he is going to tackle more because he plays alot on the line of scrimmage whereas revis is a cover corner who also tackles just as well, if not better than woodson

and like i said b4...i never said revis definitely deserved it...i just said he should have gotten alot more than recognition than he did considering he only got half the votes that woodson got

I was waiting for someone to come up in here with that. I just figured it would be someone less knowledgeable than you sir Tom. If the catch is never made, then neither is the tackle. Simple.

He would literally have to be all over the field, multiple places at once. Woodson is lined up to run stop and also covers TE's when receivers are too speedy. Of course he's gonna have more tackles. Revis is lined up against the best WR every week and shuts them down properly.

Revis got snubbed no one shut down Moss like he did and he did it twice as far as tackles go he might not have had alot of tackles but if you consider the competition and the type of talent he was up against week in week out you would say it should have been alot closer in the voting.

THE ARTICLE ABOVE IS AN EXCELLENT ARGUMENT THAT I FOUND ONLINE & DEFINITELY COVERS ALL THE ASPECTS OF WHY REVIS DEFINITELY SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED ALOT MORE THAN WOODSON

That's a great article, and they definitely broke down the numbers that matter most, the closing of the article also drives the point home what team' defense suffers more w/o their corner

REVIS' stats against the Chargers:

1 tackle for a 4 yard loss

1 pass deflected

1 overthrown pass due to stride for stride coverage on jackson

1 interception

Thats a total of 4 times that his man was thrown to after Rivers was quoted as saying they were gonna test him hahaha
