Oh geez. I too love so many across so many different genres. As for live show I'm gonna say Red Hot Chili Peppers were the best. The Allman Brothers Band is up there for best performance as well, I love the innovational style they have and they play so well together (and I think Derek Trucks is the next Hendrix), but the Chili Peppers were the absolute tightest musicians I have ever seen or imagined, and their music is much more technically sound as well.
But as for picking a favorite band overall? Depends on my mood of the day.
(in no particular order)
Beatles
Grateful Dead
Doors
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Rolling Stones
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Bob Marley and the Wailers
Metallica
Nirvana
Sublime
Radiohead
System of a Down
Green Day
to name a few... There are so many other bands who have songs that I absolutely love but I don't know enough of their other music to list them here. I think that saying favorite band is not nearly enough to describe one's taste in music. Obviously in a community like this one that is centered around electronic music we are not gonna talk about those genres, but there is so much more. Hip Hop, for example, most of which I feel is not on the same level as other "real" music, but some of which I definitely consider great art. Classical music, for God's sake. I remember before I knew any music before I could read before I did anything I loved classical music. I mean besides setting the foundation for what we know today as music it is so amazing in and of itself. So many different instruments with so many different sounds all playing together intricately in harmony, telling a story as transposed into music by the composer. Damn.
My point is that every type of music, every band, every instrument, every sound appeals to a different part of one's psyche and emotions, and for me that makes it damn near impossible to pick a favorite. =P

I'd say the Dead have the best lyrics, hands down. You have to kinda get a feel for a lot of their different stuff to fully appreciate and understand them, imo.
